What is a friction stay used for?

A friction stay is a key component of a UPVC window, designed to hold the window open at any angle without additional support. Unlike traditional top or bottom-mounted hinges, friction stays allow the window to remain securely open at various positions.

When the window is opened, the friction stay enables the sash to move down and outwards, clearing the frame. When closed, the sash moves upwards and inwards, fitting snugly back into the frame to create a tight seal. This action helps ensure the window is weatherproof, reducing the risk of drafts and water ingress.

Maintaining friction stays

It’s important to check the condition of the window now and again. If a UPVC window is not kept free of dirt and debris, the sash cannot close properly and can bend the window hinge out of shape. This in turn can cause the window to jam, which could be a serious safety issue in the event of an emergency exit.

When a window is left open to bad weather for a prolonged period of time, the mechanical parts of the hinge can develop rust. The best way to prevent rust from forming on the friction stay is to lightly lubricate the moving parts. Therefore, it’s important to make sure that window hinges are kept clean and are in good working order. If your windows become difficult to close or gaps appear at the edge of the window, it could indicate a fault with one of the stays and it’s time for a replacement window hinge.
